Farewell, F-Spot

Yup. Ubuntu made it the default photo management software and it was doing really great. Mono-based, Gtk-C# application that integrates nicely into GNOME desktop making browsing photos a much less painful experience.

But it does ruin OriginalDateTime EXIF tag by converting the contents to UTC when nobody asks about that. I mean, you open photo, tag it with some info and… you have a broken OriginalDateTime value. This tag is used to sort photos and seeing the following creates very strange feeling: A clock showing 5:58 PM while EXIF data shows 3:58

I blamed myself for not updating the date and time on the camera (but I always update it!), then the other people from whom I got the pictures (hey, they are 2 hours ahead!), but then I found F-Spot bug report that explained everything.

So, since my favorite app for photo browsing is Shotwell now and it is extremely fast for photo browsing (startup may be slow for many photos, they are working on that), I decided to uninstall F-Spot, fix my OriginalDateTime using exiftool and continue learning Vala.

The only mono app here is Tomboy. But I am using GNote and it is going to catch up soon so that I will be able to remove mono completely.
